Pursuit of Love

A beautiful hymn written by Fanny Crosby in 1875 describes a desire to be nearer to God. In this post we will discuss what it means to pursue God.

I am Thine, O Lord, I have heard Thy voice,
And it told Thy love to me;
But I long to rise in the arms of faith
And be closer drawn to Thee.

Refrain

Draw me nearer, nearer blessèd Lord,
To the cross where Thou hast died.
Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer blessèd Lord,
To Thy precious, bleeding side.

Consecrate me now to Thy service, Lord,
By the power of grace divine;
Let my soul look up with a steadfast hope,
And my will be lost in Thine.

Refrain

O the pure delight of a single hour
That before Thy throne I spend,
When I kneel in prayer, and with Thee, my God
I commune as friend with friend!

Refrain

There are depths of love that I cannot know
Till I cross the narrow sea;
There are heights of joy that I may not reach
Till I rest in peace with Thee.

Refrain

I wonder why we sometimes feel distant from God and other times nearer? Does God move? Does God hide from us? Does God run away from us that we have to pursue Him? None of these are the case, when God seems distant, we are the ones that have withdrawn. God is an ever present help in times of need (Psalm 46:1). Immediately you reach for Him, He is there in an instant, an ever present help in time of trouble.

He is always there, always faithful, always looking for an opportunity to bless you. Pursuing God therefore does not mean chasing Him because He is running away. It means never wanting to be out of His presence, we want to lie in His arms and listen to His heartbeat. We pursue Him because we love Him. We pursue Him because we thirst after Him and want to know Him more.

I want to know everything I can about God, His personality, what He likes and what He dislikes so that I can please Him. He is my friend, my lover, my husband and my all.

Don’t let anyone dissuade you from pursuing God. Don’t let anyone tell you that your devotion is too much. Like lovers, let God pursue you, yield to Him and you also pursue Him. How would a marriage be if only one spouse showed love and devotion. If the interest was only one-sided? If I am always pursuing my spouse and he doesn’t pursue me, would it be good? Like the hymn writer said “O the pure delight of a single hour, That before Thy throne I spend, When I kneel in prayer, and with Thee, my God, I commune as friend with friend!

As you draw near to Him today, He will draw near to you because He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him (Hebrews 11:6).

Below is a list of scriptures I found about seeking God, I know you will be blessed and encouraged as you read.
